"The throne does not matter. It is for the sake of this man himself that I will continue to wield my sword."
― Daryun's thoughts about Arslan in The Heroic Legend of Arslan (anime), "A Knight's Loyalty"

Daryun was a Marzbān of Pars and one of the first members of Camp of Arslan that fought against the Lusitanian invasion. He later became the Ērān of Pars, after Arslan's relieving Kishward from his duty as Ērān.

Appearance[]

Daryun is described as a handsome man, and has long, black hair which, in the 2013 manga and anime adaptations, he keeps in a low ponytail. He has narrow eyes and thin eyebrows. In the 1991 manga adaptation, Daryun is shown with shorter hair and is down rather than tied. His eyes are less narrow than his 2013 counterpart and his eyebrows appear somewhat thicker as well. Daryun in the beginning is shown wearing a dark grey, sleeveless tunic and dark pants. His battle armor in the 2013 manga and anime adaptation consists of mainly black, save for the inner part of his cloak being a dark red. In the 1991 manga, the cover art of volume two shows a similar cloak design to that of the 2013 adaptation, yet the armor itself has more a metallic sheen as opposed to the latter depictions of his armor.

According to Tanaka, Daryun's uniform color is black and red just because the title of the novel which Dr. Tanaka was reading at that time was The Red and the Black.[1]

Personality[]

Daryun is a stern, stoic, and inexplicably loyal man. He has utmost loyalty to King Andragoras and to his son Arslan, and is willing to risk his life for either of them. Daryun is also shown to have a strong sense of morality as when he has stated that he has never "stricken a man who is not on his horse." Even Farangis has gone far enough as to comment about how soft-hearted Daryun is, to which he agrees. Though he may be ruthless when faced with his enemies on the battlefield, Daryun is also shown to be a kind-hearted man, especially when he is around those who he cares for deeply.

Despite being first and foremost, a warrior, he is very intelligent and is quite a formidable battlefield tactician himself. This trait is further boosted by his ability to remain calm and level-headed throughout most of the difficulties he faces, and is not quick to anger.

Like Narsus, he values actual capacity of a person instead of extrinsic labels, being fully willing to continue pledging his loyalty to Arslan, even when he knows full well that the young prince is not actually royalty.

History[]

Daryun was dumped by the princess of Serica.

Relationships[]

Arslan[]

Daryun's charge and prince, he is loyal to Arslan to a fault. He is extremely protective of his prince, willing to risk his life to protect Arslan. This is reciprocated by Arslan, as he is exceptionally protective of Daryun, even threatening someone for the first time in his life when they cause the possibility of Daryun being hurt. At first, Daryun is mainly loyal to Arslan because he is his prince and his uncle Vahriz asked him to look after him, but after traveling with Arslan, Daryun grew loyal to Arslan as a person and does not care if he is the prince of Pars or not; he will protect him not because it is his job, but because he is Arslan. He also tended to be somewhat of a father figure more than Arslan's real father. Mostly due to the fact that the King never appreciated his own son.

Narsus[]

Daryun's friend for more than 20 years. Nowadays, their relationship is more vitriolic, but still close. The two often engage in banter and butt heads, but their friendship is strong. Daryun values Narsus' intellect and strategies, and Narsus respects Daryun's fighting abilities.

Vahriz[]

Daryun's uncle, Vahriz served more as a father than uncle to Daryun in his life. Daryun greatly loved him and listened to him more so than the king at times. Vahriz is the one who tasks Daryun in looking after Arslan. Upon learning of his death, Daryun becomes angered, suggesting he loved his uncle. The two held a very professional relationship, showing little affection; however, that does not mean it didn't exist.

Abilities[]

He is said to be the mightiest warrior around Pars and can fight with various kinds of weapons.

Etymology[]

Daryun resembles the Persian name Dariush and it may be based on said name. The name Dariush comes from Old Persian Dārayauš and means "possessing goodness," consisting of dāraya, "to possess," and vahu, "good."

Other names[]

  • Mard-e Mardān - P "Man among Men."
  • Knight in Black - A descriptional address, as he was always dressed in black clothing.
  • Shēr Senānī - "Fierce Tiger General" a combination of P shēr and S senānī. An honorary name given by Sindhurans after the fight against Bahadur.
