Farangis (ファランギース Farangiisu? ) is one of the main characters of the novel series The Heroic Legend of Arslan. She is one of the members of the Camp of Arslan that fights against Lusitanian invasion. She is a priestess of the Temple of Mithra.

History[]

She was born to a knight family. When she was a small child, her parents died. Before her father dies, he transferred half of his property to his daughter and the rest to Temple of Mithra in order to have her raised there. She studied hard as an apprentice of priestess and gained various knowledge.

When she was 17, She met Igrilus. He was 20, an excellent priest, and also was ambitious for succeed as a priest. They soon fell in love with each other. He has a younger brother, Gurgan, who was also an apprentice of priest and proud of his brother including the girlfriend.

After a year, the head priest decided to send 3 promising priests to Ecbatana and he ensured the three of them the great promotion. Though everyone admitted Igrilus’ excellent skill as a priest, he wasn’t selected. As he was formerly a free citizen and all who were selected were of noble blood, he was in despair to think that his effort was in vain. Though Farangis and others tried to cheer him up, he couldn’t recover from the depression and become delinquent. What is worse, She gradually become recognized as more skilled as a priest than him and he stated to envy her.

One day, a priest was murdered. Though Igrirus was innocent, he was arrested as a suspect, concerning his recent behavior. Farangis was always on his side, but when he tried to escape while he was on his way to the trial, he died from falling over a cliff. Gurgan’s belief in gods turn into hatred toward gods and people around him. After the real murderer was arrested he left the temple.

When Farangis blamed herself for not preventing the brothers’ corruption and asked for her resignation, the head priestess admired her experience of distress and failure as an important thing to be a priestess. This encouraged her to decide devoting her life to Mithra as a priestess[1].

Plot[]

In Pars era 320, she travels toward Ecbatana in order to help the prince, which is the head priestess’ will. In the middle of her trip, she meets Gieve and he joins her. Later on, she joins Arslan’s party.

After Arslan becomes King of Pars, she is given a position of inspector.

In Pars era 324, when she was attending a festival, she recognizes Gurgan, who has become a sorcerer. She prevents him from triggering a large disaster, but fails to arrest him.

She performs many burial services for her companions and her King. After The Last Battle and Pars has collapsed, she moves to Sindhura with the two only surviving companions, Gieve and Elam, following Arslan's will. She helps Nasrin to govern Parstan, which is an area Parsians reside in Sindhura. Here too, she conducted many funerals. She died from illness at the age of 48 in Pars era 345.[2]
