History[]
Isfān's mother was a slave who served in the house of Shapur's father. When Isfān was 2, he was saved by Shapur from a winter mountain where he was being cared for by wolves after his mother had died there. She and Isfān were left in the mountain by the legal wife of the brothers' father.
Three years after Arslan took the throne, Isfān took two orphan wolf cubs under his protection after he found them while he was in Arslan's excursion force. He names them Baharam (火星), which means "Mars" and Kayvan (土星), which means "Saturn". After that, they were always together with Isfān except when he visited Rajendra as one of the envoys. When they grew bigger, they often fought in battle and aided Isfān.
Etymology[]
Isfān is a short variant of the Persian name Esfandiyār, meaning "given by Spenta Armaiti".
Other names[]
In some translations, his name is rendered as Esfan.[1]
